Hard Drive Replacement

Laptop hard drives come in two main types. These are set out below

Laptop 2.5" IDE Hard Drive

Laptop IDE hard drives are the older type of hard drive technology. IDE refers to the type of parallel connection its uses to connect to the laptop motherboard. Data transfer with this type of drive is slower and the cost is higher, approximately 30% higher.

Laptop 2.5" SATA Hard Drive

Laptop SATA hard drives are the newer type of hard drive technology. SATA refers to the type of serial connection its uses to connect to the laptop motherboard. Data transfer with this type of drive is faster and the cost is cheaper, approximately 30% cheaper than the IDE equivalent.

The process

If a hard drive is failing but has not completely failed or if a hard drive needs replacement due to lack of available storage space then a cloning process can be used. This is a fast and simple process and takes around one hour. If the hard drive has completely failed then it will need replacing and the operating system and any drivers and backed up data will need to be replaced. This process can take more than two hours.

Lead times

All types and sizes of hard drives are kept in stock and so do not need a lead time.

Pricing

Laptop hard drives vary in price according to type and size. Starting at £35 and can go to £200
